Whiplash is a common injury following rear-end collision

It was just another day. You got up, got ready and went out the door to get to work. While in your vehicle, traveling your normal route, the driver behind you was not paying attention and struck the back of your car pretty hard. You now have pain in your neck and back -- both of which are common following a rear-end collision.

It is common to see rear-end collisions on California roads. Many victims of these car accidents suffer from whiplash. This may not sound like anything too severe, but it can cause a person to suffer in a variety of ways if it is bad enough.

Whiplash is…

When an incident forces a person's head and neck swiftly backward and then forward, the muscles and ligaments can overstretch, and joints may suffer injury. This quick and extreme extension and flexion of the neck is whiplash. Some people who suffer whiplash may only have some pain in their neck, shoulders and upper back. Others, though, may experience far worse symptoms, such as:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Trouble swallowing or chewing

Severe whiplash can also cause damage to nerves and spinal discs.

Getting a diagnosis

Following a rear-end collision, whiplash severity may not be immediately apparent. It can take hours, days or even weeks before symptoms appear. As soon as they do, one should seek medical assistance. To get a whiplash diagnosis, your medical provider will ask you questions, perform an exam and possibly order imaging tests in order to get a better look at what is going on.

Most whiplash victims do fully recover over time. There are those who may feel effects from the injury for years. Common treatments for whiplash include:

  • Rest
  • Medication
  • Cervical collar brace
  • Physical therapy
  • Alternative treatments

In severe cases, surgery is sometimes necessary. It really is a last resort option, though.

Covering your losses

If you find yourself the victim of a rear-end collision, you may find it difficult to cover your losses on your own. The good news is, you may not have to. You may seek relief by filing civil claims against the responsible party. Depending on the details of your case and how it all plays out, you may achieve compensation either through settlement negotiations or through litigation.
